Loud Sounds

Loud sounds can and do cause damage to the ears.  Such damage can cause hearing loss, tinnitus or both.  Most experts recommend that you use earplugs or other hearing protection device when exposed to 85 dB and above.  The chart to the right shows some common sounds and the intensity levels of them.  Excessive noise actually causes physical damage to the sensory cells in the inner ear (cochlea).  For the most part this is one source of ear damage that can be prevented by either avoidance or protection.  The damage from noise exposure falls into two categories, temporary and permanent.  Temporary changes are known as temporary threshold shift (TTS).  Typically, if the ear recovers from noise, it will do it within hours of the exposure. After about two weeks there is almost no chance of repairing the damage to the cochlear structures.
