Hearing aids come in a variety of styles.  Some go entirely in the ear while others fit behind or over the ear.  Below are pictures of many of the available styles.

Receiver in Canal Aid

Receiver in the canal (RIC) or receiver in the ear (RITE) are cosmetically discrete with exceptional performance.  Today's RIC hearing aids can be full featured with additional programs and connectivity.  These type of aids are available in most levels of technology.

Completely in the canal (CIC)
CIC style hearing aid

Completely in the canal (CIC) style hearing aids offer the most discrete form of amplification.  Although desirable because of the small size, CIC hearing aids cannot offer directional microphone technology due to lack of space for the circuitry.  As mentioned, directional microphones play a large role in downplaying background noise in social situations.
